Finally here – SpiderOak Android 1.0 Application released!

by with 46 comments

We at SpiderOak are very proud and excited to finally announce the launch of our SpiderOak Android app; SpiderOak Android 1.0. The launch represents the official release of our second mobile client and gives our customers yet another way of accessing, viewing and sharing their stored data ‘on the go’.

Version 1.0 of SpiderOak Android features functionality allowing the user to:

  1. Seamlessly access all of the data backed up across the SpiderOak Network – viewing office documents, pdf files, pictures, videos, music etc…
  2. Easily access their Share-Rooms as well as the shares of friends, family, colleagues, or clients (depending on access to login credentials)
  3. Email ANY file stored with SpiderOak through the Android email client (via link)

Android users can immediately download and install the SpiderOak 1.0 android app directly via SpiderOak, the Android Marketplace and the Archos Appslib.

As we do with all of our projects, we encourage your ideas and feedback as your feedback drives our development effort and makes SpiderOak better for everyone. Please don’t hesitate to send your comments and suggestions to
support@spideroak.com.

For feature hungry users we can also reveal that we already have several new features on our Android development map for release shortly, starting with a one-way file synchronization that will allow the SpiderOak app allowing arbitrary files on your SpiderOak account to be kept up-do-date with your Android device file storage.

Still to come; SpiderOak Blackberry App and a program for the Windows mobile platform, but more info on that as development on those platforms draws to a close.

  1. Great news for the SpiderOak team! And thanks to your home page graphic, now I know what the Android logo looks like.

  2. Got it working on my G2. Would be cool to be able to directly email a share URL instead of the copy paste method. So far so good though, this will be very handy!

  3. @VG we are already hard at work on new functionality. Our focus for 1.0 was a stable first version to build on. Glad you like it so far!

  4. @Nicolas – I do have to check this with our (now sleeping) developers and get back to you shortly. Good question!

  5. @Nicolas & Daniel Larsson: Not sure if this is it but I see a Source Code link on the right sidebar of this page. . .

  6. This are effectively some source code from SpiderOak, but nothing related to the android client AFAIK.

  7. Fantastic application. Have used the beta many times to access my desktop files which is great when away from home.

  8. I can't find it using my Sony Ericsson X10 Mini Pro. What are the requirements? Android 2.1? Screenresolution?

In Sweden SE X10 Mini is the top seller of all phones, and to not support the most popular device seems kind of… stupid. Reminds me of sites using "Only for IE4".

  9. It looks great… It would be nice if we could do the following:

    1. Setup a Sync between two devices
    2. View 2 devices and be able to edit there names.

It is a great start and I look forward to using this product in the future an my android phone.

  10. @Jacob: I'm using a HTC Wildfire and I also couldn't find it in the market. I downloaded it directly from the SpiderOak site (via the link in the post) and from first looks, it seems to work just fine. You might just want to try that as well.

So, you guys might want to relax your system requirements a bit. I've no idea what keeps it from appearing in the market for me; might be screen resolution, I think the Wildfire is on the lower end in that regard.

    But other than that, yay!

  11. Just installed the android app on my phone (Moto Backflip). I see one obvious bug…the file/directory listing entries are partially cut-off. I can only see half the text. I could provide a screenshot if needed. Other functionality seems to work but is fairly limited right now…I'll be anxiously waiting for updates that introduce more functionality.

One feature I would like to see (DropBox doesn't have it yet either) is the ability of the app to backup a user configurable folder(s) on the phone to the SpiderOak servers. This would make for one sick app if that could be implemented! ;)

  12. Hi there

Ive been waiting 5 days for a response to a problem I am having with SpiderOak. I said in teh email that the reason I left SugarSync was due to poor customer service. I had hoped SO would be better.

    Declan

  13. Any word on how far along the WebOS client is? I'd love to be able to switch from dropbox, but I want access from my phone too.

  14. Does anyone know who to get actual customer support from Solid Oak? I have been emailing but my specific questions are ignored and I just receive generic replies and what they say to do DOESN'T WORK. This has been going on for weeks. There is also no answer at their phone number.

  15. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software. Now I can't log on at all. I get this error message in the log:

    Traceback (most recent call last):
File "oakstart_upstart_up_dialog.pyc", line 143, in closeEvent
AttributeError: 'StartUpWizard' object has no attribute '_tray_icon'

Anyone know what this means? I am DESPERATELY trying to get this software to work. I've spent $100 and am not at all satisfied.

  16. Hi Daniel

    Thanks for that.

Yes, I sent the email to support email address 4 times now and it will be one week tomorrow without a reply from SO support. You guys have a real chance to make it bit with SO but support is key. SugarSync have a growing poor reputation. Don't follow suit!

    I'll send you email

    Declan

  17. This is great! However, I have been unable to use it because I cannot figure out what folder files are downloaded to. I have large files I would like to only download when they change, and waiting for a 20mb file every time I need to see it doesn't really work.

  18. Great stuff. Can't wait for you to implement one-way sync. I keep my music library synced between my desktop and mobile phone; currently I have to manually copy any music to my Android phone every time I acquire a new track. SpiderOak's automatic one-way sync would solve that problem!

  19. @kevin
Feel free to drop me an email directly at daniel@spideroak.com with your support issue. We are currently expanding our support team due to increased customer volume and unfortunately it sounds like your issue may have gotten lost somehow.

    Daniel

  20. Loving it on my HTC Wildfire, downloaded from the link on this page. Great to have access to my files on the go…

  21. Just tried it.
    It's great.
However, it would be easier if there were an option to save the login and not the password.
There is no way I want to save the password (In case phone is stolen). But having the login saved can be useful.

  22. Glad the client is finally out and I know this is just the first release, but I would like to be able setup a backup of my phone as well as be able to stream music content to my phone.

  23. "as well as be able to stream music content to my phone."

I agree that this would be a brilliant feature.

  24. Absolutely agree with @Sol, SpiderOak on "desktop" platforms offers real-time/off-site/online backup capability. How could you NOT offer the same on a "pocket" platform?

I'm now in my 2nd year of SO usage, and I love the [technical] service. Not so happy with the [customer] service, though. You guys definitely need to bolster your customer service — I don't mind "waiting in line" when my problem isn't top-priority, but what's unacceptable is "no response whatsoever" for months at a time.

I like the upcoming SO-to-Android file sync feature. Please also plan on Android-to-SO backups exactly like the PC/Mac/Linux platforms as well.

Keep up the good work. It's a fantastic service at a comfortable price point.

  25. It would be nice if you could share folders too. In the android app you can only share files.
    The app looks good

  26. Not sure I followed that upcoming feature bit. Will you be releasing the development roadmap? And are you saying that we can push files up from our Android into our share in future releases? Thanks, -Pk

  27. the released 1.0 android app does not work for me on nexus S (2.3) – after navigating to folder with but a single file with 2 chars in it – it spins saying 'loading content' but nothing ever happens.

Be happy to test a beta version tho if you think its working better.

  28. Sync to android is my first priority. Sync to the cloud is next. Jusy be sure to give us options like "Only over wifi" or "Only when on wifi and charging" etc…

  29. I wish it supports backup feature. It will prevent many frustrating times after lose all of data in sd card. Recently, I experienced hardware fault and it blow up some part of my sd card's FAT table. After that, I lose all of my pictures.

  30. Please release it for htc wildfire in the android market!!
"@Jacob: I'm using a HTC Wildfire and I also couldn't find it in the market. I downloaded it directly from the SpiderOak site (via the link in the post) and from first looks, it seems to work just fine. You might just want to try that as well.

    But other than that, yay!"
    this means it works!!

  31. I don't understand what i have to do… On the backup tab i have a message that said i have to provide a credential first. What's this ?

  32. Great to see this, but I'll still be using Dropbox for all of my needs until the file-sync option is available on the android platform.

  33. Can you release an armel-enabled Debian package? I'm probably alone in this – who uses netbooks anymore!
